The Shining: Shines on After 40 Years

In 1980, Stanley Kubrick brought Stephen King’s best selling novel, The Shining to life.

Regardless of the original source material, Kubrick created a frenetic and most unsettling horror. The story is centered on a maze of emotions and craziness exuded by the Torrance family, which opens the hotel to their bizarre and negative energy.

This leads to a film of dark atmosphere, engaging music thanks to the brilliance of Wendy Carlos and Rachel Kind, and from deep-felt performances by Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duval.

A Maze of Visual Delights

Playing God in horror films is usually devoted to lunatics in white lab coats with a lot of money and self-righteousness – but not always. The “mad scientist” from Dr. Frankenstein to Dr. Heiter, all have this “holier than thou” attitude, which feeds into the average “Playing God” dynamic. But what does it really mean to “play God,” and are their variables to the definition? And can we have selfless characters that keep their egos in check who are trying to do good for the world? We’ll explore all of that, and so much more, on one of our best one-hour episodes…
