The Ruins Celebrates Ten Years of Horror
For some reason, Carter Smith’s The Ruins hasn’t earned the accolades it deserves, but with its ten year anniversary, maybe fans should give it another go – or take a gander for the first time.
Based on Scott B. Smith’s best selling novel, Jonathan Tucker, Shawn Ashmore, Jena Malone, Laura Ramsey, and Joe Anderson bring the characters to life on screen.
The Ruins is about a trip to a Mayan site in Mexico best left unexplored, and what happens to the turistas when they venture where people aren’t meant to tread.
But this isn’t just another trope-filled tale about stock character college kids doing something stupid.
To help bring the story to the screen, the Carter Smith relied on cinematography from Darius Khonji, best known for his work on Se7en, and music of Graeme Revell, and phenomenal practical effects – and visual effects – magic.
Jonny Numb explores the book as well as the film with Billy Crash, and both share their insights as to why The Ruins works while so many other horror movies fall flat.
It’s definitely a happy ten year celebration for The Ruins – as long as you’re not stuck there…
