Shorts Roundup: Independent Film

2020 was a difficult year for everybody – we were forced to acclimate to a global pandemic that brought economic uncertainty, while civil unrest felt like a daily occurrence in the United States.

In the meantime, major studios struggled with the best way to release multimillion-dollar blockbusters as the spread of COVID soured cautious citizens on the traditional theatrical experience.

But while Hollywood scrambled, independent auteurs found ways to thrive. Smaller-scale filmmakers saw their work gain higher profiles and more interest via streaming services.

And filmmakers who specialize in DIY shorts were undeterred by the pandemic. If anything, these artists became more resourceful and creative in their efforts, underlining their passion for the art.

Tonight’s episode of The Last Knock highlights five short films from last year. With subjects ranging from the apocalypse, meta-horror, real-world strife, impromptu movie-dates gone wrong, and the classic perils of being alone in an isolated cabin, there’s a little something for everyone.

Many of the films mentioned in tonight’s episode are available online at no cost. Which certainly beats paying $20 for an online rental with a 48-hour time limit. Remember to support these artists and #SupportIndieFilm!
