The Last Knock opens the door to Shirley Jackson…

Come Along with Shirley Jackson

What do Richard Matheson, Neil Gaiman, and Stephen King have in common?

They were all inspired by horror, gothic, and mystery author, Shirley Jackson.

Prompted by Elizabeth Moss’ portrayal of the renowned writer in the film Shirley, we lot at the women, her life, and her inspirations.

The Lottery

Shirley Jackson rattled the nerves of The New Yorker readers in 1948 with her celebrated short story, The Lottery

But critics had a different view and that helped cement her legacy early on.

We’ll look at her life and her words, and explore how her stories still resonate today. And we’ll take a look at The Haunting film adaptation of The Haunting of Hill House from 1963.

A prolific writer, Shirley Jackson wrote six novels and some 200 short stories in a span under 48 years.

She passed away on August 8, 1965 due to a combination of obesity, excessive smoking and drinking, and a pill addiction. But why did she get that way and die before the age of 50?

The Last Knock may have the answer…
