The Sewer: Gateway to Eww…

One would think many a horror film would incorporate a sewer as its setting. After all, we have a dark, smelly, stale, wet, and unwelcoming claustrophobic environment where people are not supposed to tread. There are rats, bacteria, roaches, and disease among the refuse of humanity. It has “horror” written all over it.

But only a handful of horror movies have used the sewer as a central backdrop. But why? The Last Knock answers that and dives into the few films that do – well, at least the ones most fans are familiar with: CHUD, Septic Man, and It.

The good news for those who love the sewer and like to keep things subterranean, there are other movies in the genre that may satisfy your thirst for such a nightmare laden environment. Of course, if you have a taste for waste, enjoy adding more movies to your list.

The notion of a sewer and its impact on western civilization cannot be denied. Sewers have kept disease out of the streets and helped make the surface world so much better and cleaner – without negative smells to boot.

But the sewer can be a breeding ground for horror because what we flush away, discard, and ignore, may have its own designs.
