The Devil Didn’t Make Us Do It
After talking about horror television, and John Glover’s role of Satan in the short-lived Brimstone series, we decided to dedicate a show to the devil.
Whatever you want to call Satan (nemesis), whether it be Old Scratch, Old Nick, Little Horn, and on and on, he’s the symbol of anti-good. Anti-godliness. But he can also mean something more: God’s prosecutor
Satan in Horror
Horror cinema is an easy place for Satan to take hold. From his presence in films from the silent film Faust to Rosemary’s Baby and the Prince of Darkness and beyond, he upsets the natural order. And good, wholesome characters don’t stand a chance – or those that dismiss him. Characters on the edge of good character are the most easily swayed it seems, but why does Satan have so much influence?
We explore what makes Satan so special, especially in western hemisphere based films, and how we love to see him on screen. Think Peter Stormare’s performance in Constantine. It’s hard not to love his off-kilter quirkiness in that picture – or all the others who went over-the-top to make the Prince of Lies something real.
