Martyrs: 10-year Anniversary
In 2008, many of us heard about Martyrs when we learned that some French theatre-goers booed and walked out on the film at Cannes.
Pascal Laugier’s intense and disturbing horror has ever since rocked horror founds and showcases how the film serves as an example of how to make a genre film with incredible impact.
Martyrs features stars Mylène Jampanoï and Morjana Alaoui, who had taken the lead roles after many French actresses had turned the film down. Veteran actress Catherine Bégin played “Mademoiselle.”
Besides an innovative and suspense-laden narrative of two young women out for revenge and escape, the story’s enhanced with excellent cinematography from Stéphane Martin, Nathalie Moliavko-Visotzky, and Bruno Philip, as well as sound, editing, and special effects. Plus, Martyrs features dominating performances, and a sense of shock-and-awe that blasts viewers with remarkable power.
