Human No More: A Crash Preview

One need look no further than Christopher Alan Broadstone’s Twitter bio to see the scope of his creative versatility: “Horror Film Director, Novelist, Film/Video Editor, Screen Writer, and Musician.”

The jack-of-all-trades and founder of Black Cab Productions has made hard-hitting music with his band, The Judas Engine, and earned film-festival acclaim with his 2007 anthology film, 3 Dead Girls! He has written books, including the novel Puzzleman and the anthology, Suicide the Hard Way. Recently, he turned his novella, A Catch in Time, into a short film that took a unique multimedia approach to the marketing of the book. It worked as both art and promotion (you can find my review over at Loud Green Bird).

As a novella, A Catch in Time is a compelling, fascinating read, full of distinctive imagery, period resonance, and macabre concepts that would do Clive Barker proud. At a time when much art rests on the fallbacks of complacency and cynicism, Broadstone is pushing forward with a singular vision, diverse and disturbing in equal measure.

Derived from one of the shorts from the 3 Dead Girls! Anthology, Broadstone’s latest project is a feature-length version of Human No More.

The Black Cab Productions website summarizes the feature as follows: “Nemo, a private detective consumed by an irreconcilable murder case, revisits the HAB – a transgressive nightclub where he re-evaluates the details of his confrontations with the Mirror Murders Killer, the man that took everything from him. With each flashback, more bizarre stories, more embittered philosophies, and more dark details unfold – all nuances of truth that lead to an ultimate revelation that drives Detective Nemo back into his caustic underworld one last time. There he must face the blind eye of Heaven, the hunger of Hell, and the relentless ambiguity of his own humanity. Nemo will commit an impossible act upon himself, all in effort to seek vengeance and chase down the diabolical presence that the Mirror Murders Killer has become.”

If you’ve read Broadstone’s short story, Roseblood, you know he doesn’t mess around when it comes to archetypal imagery of an historical or religious nature, and Human No More promises to be no exception.

Currently in pre-production, Human No More will begin shooting in October, and is slated for release in 2019.
