Hong Kong Horror: Top 9 Films by Crash

Hong Kong Horror: Best of List

Hong Kong has produced some interesting and engaging horror films over the years, and these are the best of the bunch:

9 The Eye

(2002) 3 stars

The original dark film proved to be so successful, it spawned a sequel as well as a horrible American remake. This Hong Kong feature follows a young woman (Angelica Lee) who gets a cornea transplant and can finally see – but now, she can also see ghosts.

8 The Eye 2

(2004) 3 stars

Directors Danny Pang and Oxide Chun Pang bring us more darkness and more ghosts. This time, another young person (Shu Qi) can see ghosts after her failed suicide attempt.

7 Inner Senses

(2002) 3 stars

Yan (Kar Yan Lam) sees dead people. But her therapist (Leslie Cheung) says it’s all in her head – until he starts seeing them too. The pair must unravel the mystery in this crime horror.

6 Koma

(2004) 3 stars

Revered Hong Kong actresses Angelica Lee and Kar Yan Lam team up in this dramatic horror. There’s love, lust, betrayal, revenge, and a bizarre love triangle – along with missing body parts.

5 Re-cycle

(2006) 3 stars

In this co-production with Singapore, Angelica Lee stars again as a successful author who decides to write a suspense thriller. Chaos ensues when a former lover shows up after eight years to propose, and one of her book’s characters comes to life.

4 The Cat

(1992) 3 stars

Cat-egorize this under “bizarre.” A cat from outer space teams up with humans in Hong Kong to stop an alien that possesses people. This is one wild, entertaining trip! (Pairs well with Japan’s Hausa for a crazy double cat feature.)

3 Men Behind the Sun

(1988) 3 stars

Commissioned by the Chinese government to showcase Japan’s WWII atrocities, Tun Fei Mou uses real body parts and show’s footage of a boy’s autopsy to drive the point home. But the government was upset that he didn’t go deeper. One of the world’s most disturbing films.

2 Bio-Zombie

(1998) 3.5 stars

During the middle of the day, zombies run amok in a Hong Kong shopping center. This is the story of a group trying to fight their way out. Great characters and dialogue rock the outbreak!

1 Dream Home

(2010) 4 stars

A dramatic, crime-laden story, the great Josie Ho portrays Cheng Lai Sheung, a woman in search of her first home in Hong Kong. When the real estate deal falls through, Cheng may have to kill to get that home of her dreams. A strong, character-driven narrative about excess – and timing.
