Alex Kahuam’s Forgiveness: A Nightmare of the Senses by Susan Leighton

Forgiveness: Maimed and Confused

Alex Kahuam, the director of the Ted Raimi short film, Red Light has an equally terrifying endeavor on the horizon. I was given the chance to check out the talented creator’s trailer for his upcoming film, Forgiveness and it is disturbing.

At first glance, Kahuam’s effort is reminiscent of a fever dream, albeit one directed by Dario Argento. We are introduced to three women in a hospital. One of them is mute, the other is deaf and the third one is blind.

The trio are unpleasantly surprised to find themselves missing those critical senses. It would appear that someone or something must have altered them. However, they have no recollection of what circumstances maimed them.

It is apparent that the women have been locked away for a reason and it clearly is not a good one. Some of the most prominent images in the promo featured several, creepy individuals with black eyes. Could they be demons?

Perhaps, the hospital isn’t a care facility but one of the many rings of hell, similar to Dante’s Inferno. The title of the film is Forgiveness, maybe the sensory deprived females committed sinful acts causing them to lose specific senses and they have to atone for their wrongdoings.

Always Horrifying

There is quite a bit to ponder when viewing Kahuam’s venture. Everywhere you turn, something horrifying is happening. A patient is being tormented by two people wearing pig’s heads, there is a man cutting someone open and a nurse who might be a vampire.

Everything about this trailer is relentless. The John Carpenter like electronic score buzzing in the background of each scene as the action builds to a crescendo cranking up the terror factor. Kahuam’s nightmarish images tease the viewers’ imaginations and make them want to enter into his petrifying world.

Forgiveness will be making the film festival rounds starting in February. The director hopes to release his chilling work later this year. Horror fans put this production on your “must-see” list.
