Evil Dead: Where it Began…
Long before Starz brought Ash vs Evil Dead to the small screen, horror fans from the 80s fell in love with Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead starring groovy Bruce Campbell. One may think the low budget independent feature was a piece of cinematic luck, but thanks to great acting and a strong story full of gore and laughs, its success had almost been guaranteed.
The crazy horror and comedy tale of a “cabin in the woods” at first seemed to keep Ash and company safe from the outdoors, but it harbored the Necronomicon, a book of immense evil soon to be unleashed by human curiosity. With Campbell’s body language and penchant for physical comedy, the film became a cult classic without a marketing team telling you it had to be.
Evil Dead II followed, which turned out to be an even groovier remake of its own, though many prefer the final Army of Darkness when Raimi and company had a bit more money to make one wild period piece.
The fact remains that Evil Dead impressed a legion of horror fans that wanted something cool, engaging, and off the rails, and cast and crew delivered. And because of this stellar foundation, the half-hour comedy/horror Ash vs Evil Dead has been a major success as it enters season three.
The question: Will Ash vs Evil Dead have a fourth season? Absolutely – if lovers of horror have their collective say. Like the original, the show features Ash, who’s never short-handed, with a strong cast to help save the world from the powers of the Necronomicon and its pesky and prolific deadites once more.
