Canine Horror: We Let the Dogs Out to Haunt and Howl

You know what happens in a horror movie with a canine: Sooner or later, that dog’s going to help because it’s a victim to some nasty thing outdoors – and a human is next on the menu.

But wait! If canines aren’t one of the first victims suddenly leaving a person or family even less protected, the dog can become the aggressor – usually as part of a pack – and will rip souls to shreds.

THE LAST KNOCK looks at many canine-centric horror films, like Cujo and The Thing, but other great films with poignant scenes where dogs either shine or lead to one’s undoing.

All of that aside, there is something poignant about having a canine animal companion in a scene or movie when carnage is part of the horror-based menu. To say a horror feature with a dog will ultimately lead to that canine’s death is an understatement because this maneuver has become a well-established trope.

Around the world, canines have served humanity as companions as well as animal wranglers, hunters, retrievers, rescuers, and much more. Maybe it’s our special relationship with dogs that makes us cringe that much more when one runs into the woods after a crazed killer.
