The Cabinet of Dr Caligari: 100th Anniversary

In 1920, director Robert Wiene unleashed a coveted horror film that continues to resonate and inspire filmmakers.

The Cabinet of Dr Caligari tells of the story of Cesare, played by the formidable Conrad Veidt, in a world where German Expressionism reigns supreme. And whenever Cesare awakens, murders happen.

The Legacy

But The Cabinet of Dr Caligari doesn’t stand the test of time because it’s one of the oldest surviving Silent Era horror films. The film is ripe with theme and imagery that may have even inspired Dr. Seuss.

Written by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer, the film features phenomenal cinematography from Willy Hameister and Hermann Warm’s fantastical set design. And Conrad Veidt’s excellent acting as the original Emo kid.

The Last Knock discusses the film, its influence on moviemaking storytelling, and even the outstanding 2005 remake from David Lee Fisher and starring Doug Jones.

Yes, we go far deeper than that, and we hope you enjoy The Cabinet of Dr Caligari and its multifaceted history – and its place in history.
