Alien: 40th Anniversary

On June 22, 1979, Ridley Scott’s Alien was unleashed upon a global audience.

What should have been a B-movie venture, proved to be a worthy, quality driven film for both horror and science fiction fans alike.

The film’s success solidified Scott’s position as a solid director of genre films, while launching the careers of Sigourney Weaver among others in what is now a star-studded cast.

Alien also brought a strong female character in Ripley to the forefront, adding an entirely new dimension to the “final girl” trope.

Yet there is far, far more to the film, its power, and its thematic value.

Acid Test

After 40 years, we’ll see if Alien holds up to time. Most important, we’ll look at what made it worthy in the first place.

The themes are deep, and Jonny has enough new information to tickle anyone’s fancy – and sometimes, it’s on a most unsettling level.

Regardless, the movie is phenomenal due to its layers, its isolation, and the way in which the “uncanny” and how the element of “the other” is faced – or face hugged.

Enjoy!
